This article explains how graphics modes function on XBOX Series X|S, PlayStation®5, and PlayStation®5 Pro consoles. It also provides an overview of some of the technologies used in Halo: Campaign Evolved that support these modes.
Graphics Modes
Every console includes two graphics modes:
- Quality: Runs the game at a target of 30 frames per second, prioritizing higher visual fidelity and resolution.
- Performance: Runs the game at a target of 60 frames per second, prioritizing smoother gameplay and increased responsiveness.
How to Change Your Graphics Mode:
- Open the Settings menu using the Menu button on XBOX, or Options button on PlayStation®.
- Select Video.
- Navigate to the Graphics Mode dropdown.
- Select your preferred option (Quality or Performance).
Graphics technology
Halo: Campaign Evolved uses several graphics technologies to support visual fidelity while maintaining the selected frame rate target.
Dynamic Resolution
All consoles utilize a Dynamic Resolution Scale (DRS). DRS is used to automatically adjust the game’s rendering resolution in real time to help maintain a stable frame rate.
When the system is under heavier load, such as during intense combat or large on-screen effects, the resolution may be temporarily lowered to help maintain the framerate target of 30 or 60 frames per second. When system demand decreases, such as entering a quieter area with fewer enemies on screen, the resolution scales back up to increase visual fidelity and provide the best possible image quality.
Upscaling Techniques
Upscaling techniques render the game at a lower internal resolution and then reconstruct the image into a higher resolution output. This reduces GPU workload to increase performance, while maintaining a sharp final image on your display.
Halo: Campaign Evolved uses different upscaling technologies depending on the console:
Temporal Super Resolution (TSR)
TSR is an upscaling technique that uses information from previous frames to improve image clarity, reduce aliasing, and preserve fine detail while the game is running at a lower native resolution. This allows the game to maintain its target frame rate while delivering a sharper and more stable image than standard upscaling methods.
PlayStation®Spectral Super Resolution 2 (PSSR2)
PSSR2 is a PlayStation®-optimized implementation of temporal image reconstruction technology designed for use on PlayStation®5 Pro hardware. Like TSR, this temporal approach improves system performance while maintaining image quality.
